Organic Farming and the USDA’s organic certification program, despite its flaws, remains the gold standard for chemical-free food production. Since 2014, Mt. Folly Farm has proudly maintained this certification. Part of the process involves an annual inspection and testing of organic crops, like the farm’s corn. The latest test results, received in December, showed non-detectable levels of pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides—proof of the farm’s long-standing commitment to chemical-free practices.
Mt. Folly is now taking its efforts further by focusing on soil health, a key to producing more nutritious food. Unlike USDA-certified hydroponics—which European standards do not recognize—Mt. Folly’s crops grow in living soil teeming with vitality. This healthier soil contributes to higher nutritional quality, as detailed in a blog post for World Soil Day 2024, available at www.mtfollyfarm.com.
The farm also offers hemp products, whiskey, pasture-raised beef, and pork through The Mercantile on Main in Winchester, Ky. The nutrient-rich meat benefits from the animals’ outdoor upbringing, with plans to expand distribution by early 2025.
Meanwhile, the farm is bustling with new life as their gilts (first-time mother pigs) are “pigging,” with some challenging but successful births marking the holiday season.
Visitors are welcome year-round, with discounted rates at the homestead through spring. Come and experience the farm’s sustainable practices firsthand—you’re sure to leave inspired.
